If you walk into one of the massive data centers that underpin Facebook’s ever-expanding online empire, you’ll find tens of thousands of computer servers. Many of them are designed by Facebook, and most run Linux, the open source operating system that drives so much of the modern web. But those aren’t the only machines you’ll find.

Recently a friend in a reading group suggested that we read The Critical Net Critic. While the piece is somewhat long and meandering it is also very good at helping to answer some of those fundamental questions about what is changing in the present economy and how we should understand (Information Technology) IT in relation to the rest of the productive economy.

Study Says Social Movements "Should Never Be Called a Twitter or Facebook ... - techPresident | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A report on Digital Activism and Non-Violent Conflict was released this month by the Digital Activism Research Project. It found that the role of hacking and cybercrime in digital activism is grossly overstated by the media and that while Facebook and Twitter are the leading platforms for activism on a global scale, other tools do well on a smaller, regional scale. The study found no causation or correlation between specific tools and positive outcomes.

Why Snapchat wasn't crazy to rebuff Facebook - Fortune

Why Snapchat wasn't crazy to rebuff Facebook - Fortune | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Most interesting is the question of how Facebook's interest is impacting Snapchat's plan to raise new capital at a big valuation (a deal that likely will include more founder liquidity). One theory is that it's an effort to make Zuckerberg increase his offer, by showing that others believe the company is far more valuable than his opening volley. An alternate – and more likely – theory is that this raise is to eliminate any temptation to sell the company, both for the founders and early investors (who may also get some cash back).

I know this statement sounds remarkable, perhaps even unbelievable. After all, you offer marketers access to the largest audience in media history and you know a remarkable amount about each of your users. As a result nearly every large company now markets on Facebook. Last year your company collected more than $4 billion in advertising revenues.

One-third of US adults get news through Facebook: study - Reuters UK

One-third of US adults get news through Facebook: study - Reuters UK | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Almost 80 percent of those surveyed happen upon news when they are checking up on friends or sharing photos. Heavy news consumers did not describe Facebook as an important source of news, the study found.

Laura Diamond's curator insight, December 28, 2014 6:18 PM

The way we are viewing our news for the day is changing rapidly from reading it on a piece of paper for $1.70 to just logging onto Facebook, Twitter or any other social platform and reading the up to date current events around the world. I personally find myself reading the news events of the day on my Facebook i can't even remember the last time I physically purchased a newspaper from the store.
