SELC and Shareable Kickoff Campaign to Save Seed Sharing in the U.S.

SELC and Shareable Kickoff Campaign to Save Seed Sharing in the U.S. | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Neil Thapar first encountered seed issues in law school when he worked with the Center for Food Safety against genetically-modified food. But it was a season spent working on an organic farm in Santa Cruz, California when he began to understand, first-hand, the importance of seeds as a foundation of our agricultural system. He explains, “When I came off the farm I said, ‘If I’m going to be a lawyer, I’m going to be a lawyer doing things that I think are making a positive difference.’”

How to Host a Cash Mob

How to Host a Cash Mob | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Cash mobs are a great way to boost local business and bring community together while you’re at it. The idea is simple: a group of people flood a store and pledge to buy stuff. Think flash mob but instead of dancing, you’re spending money to help give back to the local economy.

New Report: Sharing Economy Must be Shaped by City Governments to Deliver Public Benefits | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
As the sharing economy explodes in growth, with new startups emerging regularly, many city officials are left scratching their heads wondering how to deal with this industry. New North Carolina Coop to Turn a Food Desert into a Food Oasis

New North Carolina Coop to Turn a Food Desert into a Food Oasis | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
In 1998, when the Winn-Dixie grocery store in Northeast Greensboro, North Carolina closed, it created a food desert—a community without easy access to food. For years, area residents tried to get another grocery chain to come in, but none wanted to come to the predominantly African-American, low-income town. The community finally came up with a solution—one that didn't rely on an outside company to come in. They put into motion a plan to open a food cooperative.
foodofhistory's curator insight, February 19, 2015 6:31 PM

The coop is one of the few places where we have food choices that are democratic in nature. This new co-op is a glimmer of hope in the vastly conservative (and business-focused) state of North Carolina.

Mari-Lyn Harris's curator insight, February 19, 2015 7:35 PM

Yes, and why not?

Community Supported Everything Incubates Social Change in Portland | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Shareable connected with Sam Smith and Laura Scher, directors of the project, to discuss the importance of giving ideas a place to grow, how our education system has made us passive observers rather than proactive doers, and how being held accountable to your vision is incredibly empowering. Their responses are collaborative.
